Nan - Always In Our Hearts

Traditionally, saying farewell to a loved one is a sad occasion but after saying a final goodbye to my Nan today, I feel happy she is finally at peace. Seeing her laid to rest brought a smile inside rather than tears as though it sounds strange, I said goodbye to the Nan I knew and loved long ago.

Until I saw her lying peacefully and relived of pain two days ago, my most recent memory of Nan is one which had haunted me but no more. A few years ago, although I was aware he was ill, knew little of just how much it would affect her. However this hit home one sad day when returning from a walk to the shop.

As I turned onto our road, I spotted what I thought was Nan going to our house but she went past it and knocked a few doors down. I assumed from the back, it wasn't her and rather than shout and be embarrassed if proved true, I continued home. However, as I reached the door, I heard a voice and instantly knew it was her as she said "I'm looking for my daughter Carol's house" to which I replied "It's here, Nan, It's me Simon." it sounds weird that I told her who I was but after saying Nan she seemed puzzled.

She said “Yes, Simon is Carol's son, is he in?" At this point, I was struggling to hold back the tears and simply said "not at the moment, but I'll get Carol to ring you when their home." Happy with the reply she said she was going home and in my upsetting state, allowed her to for fear of her reacting if I followed her to make sure she got home safe.

Back home, first thing I did was ring mum and mention Nan had popped round looking puzzled and didn't know who I was. It was then that she told me Nan was suffering with Dementia. In that very moment for me my Nan had gone forever. However, my lasting thoughts of nan will be happy ones after growing up knowing she was always there to talk to and at many times have a good laugh with as such the remainder of this tribute I dedicate to a number of highlights from the joy I shared with her.

Out and About- when thinking of trips with Nan and grandad, three words come to mind, St Helens, Tuebrook and Kirkby. All three bring great memories of bargain markets and exotic odours of meat and fish. St. Helens stands out in the form of a little café in the back streets featuring chips and mushy peas which we visited very often and the famous NSS newsagents which they both joked was the home of Christmas presents.

Extended Visits- one of the joys at a young age when visiting nan and grandad was the weekends staying over with the recent stays after grandad's passing throwing up come classic memories with nan. A notable one was a weekend I stayed over which saw us take part in a Monopoly game which spanned both mornings and evenings and after so long we decided to call it a fair draw.

Gardening- a big part of Nan's life after grandad passed was the upkeep of a very busy garden but my most memorable thought of those days in the garden came when I came close to killing both me and Nan while mowing the lawn. We were chatting and all of a sudden the lead from the mower became caught and sliced under the blades which cut the power and gave me a bit of a shock but luckily Nan moved quickly away from the plug outlet to prevent a fatal accident.

I could go on with more and more memories but the highlights above make me smile enough to feel I have done my best to give a glowing tribute to a great Nan and a wonderful person who graced so many lives and will continue to do long after her passing.

Spring In Full Swing

A huge delay for this post after a busy April continued into May but more on the latter in next month's edition. After just three goals in the first three months of the year, April saw two further goals reached bringing the total to five overall while progress was made on many others.

As is the trend with this years posts, the starting point is the world of sport and after no attendance in March, April saw my return to Anfield as I attended the game against Newcastle which saw my unbeaten run continue with a win. Across the month, Liverpool had a mixed run of form with a heavy defeat to Arsenal followed by a narrow FA Cup replay win over Blackburn and the aforementioned win against Newcastle came ahead of a defeat to Aston Villa at Wembley in the FA Cup semi final. The month ended with a draw against West Brom and a strange loss away to Hull.

Continuing on football, Skem United ended the season on a high despite a poor start to the month with defeats to Rushall and Marine. United secured a unique home/away double over eventual champions FC United in front of a 2000 strong crowd at Stormy Corner before coming out on top in a superb Liverpool Senior Cup final battle with AFC Liverpool which ended 5-4 and ensured United secured some silverware. The season ended with a home win against Stourbridge which meant Skem finished seventh in the NPL which is an achievement in only their second season in the division.

Moving onto Rugby League which saw a huge ten game attendance across the month featuring five Super League, three Scholarship and two Academy games. Super League wise there were three superb home wins for Wigan starting with the Good Friday derby against St Helens followed by triumphs over Catalans and Warrington.

Away Days saw the Easter Monday away trip to Salford end in defeat before the away curse finally ended with a win at Wakefield, my first away success since last July. The U16 attendances saw an away defeat to St Helens followed by home losses to Widnes and Huddersfield while the Academy strolled to home victories against Catalans and Castleford as they maintained top spot in the league table. The run of games saw my goal of 125 Wigan games reached on the 11th of the month at the Catalans 19's game.

The continued success of  'Simon's Away Days' and the continuing run of 'Out and About', which has reached 14 weeks of content has seen a rise in subscribers and my goal of reaching 10,000 views edge ever closer.

My rugby league travels have certainly boosted me since the start in February and although my mixed sleeping pattern has continued, there has been some improvement with long away trips resulting in dropping off to sleep within an hour of coming home.boost I said I needed in last month's post and the questionable sleeping pattern also mentioned has improved with away trips resulting in an early night after arriving home sometimes the following day.

Gaming wise, the month has been a stunning success as not only did I continue the 100+ unlocks streak in full months but reached a haul of 122 with 80 on the Xbox One itself. Three completions came in the form of #IDARB, Zombie Driver and Trivial Pursuit all on the Xbox One.

The month also saw a new best day for TA Points as well as a new third best with the two sandwiching the best ever overall day of 27th March which still holds unlock/Gamerscore records. The two days came on the 29th and 30th with the latter taking top spot and the month got even better with the second gaming goal of the year achieved in reaching 125,000 G on the third of the month.

As with last month, there have been a few events in May at the time of writing but there are a still a fair amount to look forward to as follows...
  • Rugby wise, home games for the Academy and Scholarship against Cumbria and Midlands Academies.
  •  The senior team host Hull KR in the Challenge Cup and my fourth Magic Weekend ends the month but a new venue to add to my list of travels with it taking place in Newcastle.

A few photo highlights of the month can be seen below....
