Football/NFL - Jan To June

After what seems like a long time since this blog portal was updated, rather than do month by month catchup, it seems better to do the main subjects from the start of the year up to the end of June.

Sport

Football is the best place to start with it currently being pre-season but sadly the back end of the 2015/16 season was not one with great success.

Skelmersdale United began the year with a 3-1 home defeat to Sutton Coldfield meaning my first attendance of 2016 was on to forget. They lost 4-0 away to Salford City before the long awaited FA Trophy game against AFC Fylde was played at the AJ Bell Stadium which was great to visit away from Rugby League but saw a 4-0 loss. Skem bounced back 4-1 away to Colwyn Bay before a 3-1 away loss at Stourbridge though the month ended with some success in attendance with a 1-1 draw with Ramsbottom United.

February saw a great home winning run with 2-1 wins over Hyde United and Ilkeston followed by one of the wins of the season as Skem thrashed Rushall Olympic 4-1. A 3-0 loss away to Frickley and 3-0 away win at Ramsbottom boosted them before my next attendance saw a 1-0 loss against Grantham Town.

March began badly with a 3-2 home loss to Marine in the M58 Derby before a 5-2 away loss at Stamford and 3-1 away loss at Barwell. The win of the year for me so far in terms of attendances came against Salford City as Skem sealed a 3-1 win with Max Hazeldine scoring all three. A 1-1 draw away to Hyde United was followed by one of the dullest home games of the year in a 0-0 draw vs Whitby Town. Easter saw a 2-1 win away to Matlock Town before a controversial 1-0 loss at home to Nantwich, a game that I filmed as a trial for the Evo-Stik website.

April began with a 3-3 home draw v Barwell which saw Skem concede in the final minute before a superb 2-1 win at Blyth Spartans to secure a home/away double. United lost 3-0 away to eventual champions Darlington 1883 before a 1-1 home draw with Mickleover Sports. The final home game of the season was one to forget as relegation threatened Stamford cruised to a 4-1 win with the season ending away to Whitby Town who claimed a 1-1 draw late on. Skem sadly ended the season in 16th place but still to defend their Liverpool Senior Cup title with the semi-final delayed until late July.

Liverpool so far this year saw no attendances but mixed success under the charge of Jurgen Klopp, the year began with a 2-0 loss away to West Ham United before a 1-0 away success at Stoke in the Capital One Cup Semi Final first leg. An FA Cup Third Round tie against Exeter City saw a 2-2 draw before a 3-3 at home to Arsenal in the EPL. A 1-0 loss to Manchester United followed ahead of a 3-0 replay win over Exeter and a nine goal thriller at Norwich saw a 5-4 win. A place at Wembley was secured with a 6-5 penalty win after a 1-0 defeat to Stoke left it 1-1 on aggregate and the month ended with a 0-0 draw against West Ham in the FA Cup.

February saw a 2-0 loss to Leicester City followed by a 2-2 draw with Sunderland which was subject to the walkout protest about ticket prices before an exit in the FA Cup losing 2-1 in extra time to West Ham. A superb 6-0 win against Aston Villa was followed by a 0-0 away draw and 1-0 home win against FC Augsburg in the Europa League. A sadness on my birthday though as the Reds lost 2-1 to Manchester City in the COC Final.

March began with a 3-0 win over Manchester City in the EPL before a 2-1 away loss at Crystal Palace, a 2-0 home win and 1-1 away draw against Manchester United in the Europa League to seal a 3-1 aggregate success. The month ended with a 3-2 loss at Southampton after leading 2-0.

April began with a 1-1 draw with Tottenham before the same score away to Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League and just days later a superb 4-1 win at home to Stoke City before a night that will live long in the memory as the Reds came from 3-1 down to win 4-3 against Dortmund and seal a spot in the next round. The league games saw joy with a 2-1 away win at Bournemouth, an excellent 4-0 derby win over Everton and 2-2 draw with Newcastle. The month ended with a 1-0 defeat away to Villarreal in the Europa League semi-final first leg.

The final month of the season was a mixed one as the Reds began with a 3-1 loss at Swansea before cruising to a 3-1 win over Villarreal to reach the Europa League final. The league ended with a 2-0 win over Watford and 1-1 draw in the final home game against Chelsea with the final game being a 1-1 draw at West Brom leaving them with a final position of eighth. The Europa League final saw the Reds lead 1-0 at half-time before a second half collapse saw them lose 3-1 so no silverware this season despite reaching two finals.

Success did come for my NFL team Washington Redskins as after ending 2015 with the divisional title, they ended the regular season with a 34-23 win over Dallas Cowboys to end with a record of 9-7. Sadly though their season ended in January with a defeat in the Wildcard round to Green Bay Packers losing 35-18. However, after the last few years have been miserable ones, to have a 9-8 season is a success rather than a negative.
